Light Winds for Race 3 of Cruiser Series

By Gordon - Last updated: Wednesday, August 3, 2011

A light WNW breeze greeted the cruiser fleet on Wednesday 27th.July. Race officer Gordon Thompson sensibly kept the fleet in the Gelliswick Bay/5A/Hakin Point ODM triangle. With conditions favouring the smaller boats, Egomania keenly lept into an early lead, only to be called back for being a little too keen on the line. Serifos was looking for stronger winds at the south side ot the line, but this didn’t pay, and Carpe Diem and Anna B were tightly contesting the lead on ther opening beat to Gelliswick Bay. Carpe Diem led closely round the first mark, but Serifos soon passed her when they got their spinnaker flying. THer dead run down to 5A didn’t suite Anna B at all, and she slowly fellaway from ther fleet. Egomania under spinnaker just managed to pass the goose-winged Carpe Diem going in to 5A, but Carpe Diem managed to go higher and faster towards Eastermost and tyhe Hakin Point ODM, and this order remaioned for the rest of the race. However, on corrected time, Egomania was the winner, with Carpe Diem second and Serifos third.
The series is now closely led by Carpe Diem, with Serifos second and Anna B third.

Digest of the Minutes of the July 2011 meeting

There were three points raised that required immediate action during the recent H & S carried out by PCC. One has been completed and the other two are receiving attention.

The Bar Staff have been thanked form their efforts over the past month, coping with the events we have had.

The Club Fun Day will be on Saturday 20th. August, the same day as the Dinghy Regatta.

To make the hiring of the upstairs room easier, we are drawing up a list of hire charges, together with a list of the facilities, and the costs, we will be able to offer. We are currently looking at prices for WiFi.

In order to clarify the conditions for Junior Membership we are drawing up rules. In addition we are seeking information about membership cards with electronic strips embedded, with a view to having these to act as keys to various parts of the club, and possibly being able to be loaded with cash for bar purchases.

The WYA are keen to promote sailing, we will be doing as much as we can to promote our club, and the facilities for sailing in the Haven.

The boat park is quite full at present, with only a few spaces vacant.

Some concern has been expressed following the finding of a Stanley knife in the compound. This is an ideal tool to be used for malicious damage. All club users are earnestly requested to take care not to leave such items in the compound.

Well done our rowers in gaining first place in their section at the town carnival.

Tight at the Top after Summer Series Race 3

By Gordon - Last updated: Wednesday, August 3, 2011

After last weeks runaway win for Serifos, the fleet was keen to stop a repeat performance by Richard. The weather had cleared after poor weather in the morning, and blue skies and a decent northerly breeze greeted the fleet when they emerghed from the docks. Race officer Henry Lloyd, recovered from his injuries, sent the fleet down the haven, with Behar as the furthest mark. Carpe Diem made a good start at the pin end of the line under white sail, heading for Cunjic buoy, while the spinnaker boats chose to start under spinnaker from further inshore. Carpe Diem led as far as the Mrco jetty before being overhauled by Serifos. As the boat progressed toward Al Kohr buoy, Egomania and Ariel made upgood gound, but the wind then started to head the fleet, bringing the spinnakers down. On the fetch to Behar, Serifos could not shake olff Carpe Diem, and Anna B was also making good ground, p;assing the smaller boats. The dead run from Behar to Chapel saw Carpe Diem closing on Serifos. After Chapel the fleet close reached back up the Haven, heading towards Cunjic. The fleet had to keepto the south of the haven to avoid the large wind shadow of a tanker molored at Murco jetty, but them the wind started to head the fleet. All boats except Carpe Diem had to tack toround Cunjic except for Carpe Diem, which just managed to squeak around it. Ariel had to track jus to get around the Chevron jetty!. The course continued through ther Hakin Point line, round Milford Shelf,Wetermost, and then through the line. While Serifos crfossed the line first, she had not sailed her time on Carpe Dikem or Anna B, so that the corrrected results were Carpe Diem 1st, Anna B second, and Serfos third. So the series nolw has all these boats joint 1st. on 4 points. So all the play for next week.
If you read this and dont compete at the moment, why not come out next Wednesday and join the fun. If you are new to the sport, don’t be reluctant. We are all very friendly (off the water!), and all of us will help you to understand the courses and procedures.
