Bar Changes and Winter Newsletter 2013

Bar Changes and Winter Newsletter 2013

Dear Member

As mentioned in our Spring Newsletter about the difficulties
with the bar trade and needing to look at winter hours the Committee has
concluded a detailed review and decided to act. With the significant losses over
a number of years and poor winter usage by Club Members the bar will close 3
evenings a week during the winter. From the 4th November the Bar
will be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings it will re-open on these
days from the 1st April. This change has not been an easy decision
to take but we believe it is in the best interests of the Club and we thank the
staff for their flexibility in accommodating the changes. With these changes
and to increase security, the East gate to the compound will be locked more
frequently. For ease of access, boat owners should consider purchasing a West
gate key from the Steward and are reminded to always re-lock the West gate on
leaving the compound.

In an attempt to promote more use of the Bar, we will be
putting in place over the coming months light bar snacks which the Steward/Bar
staff will be able to provide as well serving drinks. In the summer we will be
offering a fuller catering service on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings as
well as the bar snacks outside of these times. We hope members will use the bar
more frequently, not just after being on the water but also at other times.

The Club’s excellent facilities remain available any day of
the week throughout the year for functions. We ask that you consider the Club
for any functions or meetings such as birthdays, christenings, business or
training courses etc…. We can source catering or you can provide yourself.
Please call the Club on 01646 692799 for bookings.

In the coming weeks we will be open as usual for the Autumn
Rugby internationals and will be offering food. With those later kick-offs and
food PYC makes a great place to watch. We also have the following event coming
up:

Please see the website http://www.pembsyachtclub.org.uk/
for more details and to keep up to date.

If you have not provided an email address please contact Gordon
Thompson on gordon.thompson@virgin.net
for email updates.

We have enjoyed one of the best summers for many years and have
been busy in a number of areas on the water.

In dinghy sailing we successfully hosted the Mirror National
Championship which generated much needed funds to reinvest into the Club’s
infrastructure. We thank our sponsors for their support and Club Members for
giving up their time. As a Club we demonstrated we can put on a top event and
hope to attract other classes in the future. We established the “7 Forts” long
distance event attracting competitors from across South Wales. The sponsored
abseil last year and a grant application allowed us to purchase 3 new two handed
boats for our junior sailors. These boats provide an ideal platform for the
less experienced to gain confidence and develop teamwork. Thank you to everyone
who sponsored the juniors. We are now running 2 sail training sessions a week including
race training which led to us holding a successful junior regatta. We hope to be
able to train new senior instructors next year to expand and offer adult
training. If you are interested in junior or adult sail training please contact
Christian Smart on 07966505767 or smartrimmer@aol.com

The rowing section had another successful season competing
and expanding the social rowing section. The Club hosted the final regatta of
the Welsh Sea Rowing Association season with 25 boats competing in some races
and over 250 participants across the classes. It was great to see the Club so
full. We have also introduced a junior section this season and they have also
started competing. The growing demand for rowing means we are looking for
another boat and there will be rowing throughout the winter months. If you are
interested in racing or just keeping fit please contact Karl Webber on
07790854498 or webber8291@msn.com .

Cruiser sailing remained at a low ebb during the Summer but
has increased a little with the Winter series. We will be racing each Sunday
until 22nd December. You may have not considered racing before but a
Sunday morning cruise or blast is better than DIY so please get in touch with
Gordon Thompson on 07741188210 or gordon.thompson@virgin.net
for details. He might be able to find boat owners a crew/racing helm or vice
versa.

We held a boat fishing competition in aid of a number of
charities during the Summer that was well supported following a slow start. We
have a combined boat and shore based “Winter Cod Competition” on the 24th
November. Please see the website or contact Martin at Angler Corner 01646
698899 or Richard Dalton 07973 135781.

With the improvements to the compound to improve security we
now have space for all sizes of vessels up to 36 feet at very reasonable rates.
Please contact Kelvin Harper on 01646 690045 or kelvin.harper@btopenworld.com
or pass on the details to others.

The Committee tries hard to manage the affairs of the Club
effectively and undertake various maintenance activities. We will unfortunately
be losing a number of Committee members due to other commitments and leaving
the area. If you fancy becoming a Committee member, Flag Officer or Bar
Secretary please contact Gordon Thompson on 07741188210 or gordon.thompson@virgin.net  .

We have superb facilities at the Club but really need Members
to use them so we can continue to maintain them to a high standard. So with food
more available, a re-invigorated Entertainments Committee and of course another
great summer of weather we will make the Club thrive in all areas despite the
reduction in winter bar hours!

Signed

Thefts from Boat Park

By Gordon - Last updated: Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Dear Boat Parking member

We have had at least two thefts from boats that are parked at PYC.  The worrying thing is there may well be more that are yet to be discovered.  The two known thefts have occurred from the lower and central terrace area to the west of the club house. In both cases fixed marine radios were targeted.  In addition there are a number of boats whose covers appear to have been interfered with (though this may be due to the recent high winds).  As far as we know these thefts occurred between Saturday 5th October 2013 and Monday 21st October 2013.

The Police have been informed and Mike is scanning the CCTV footage to see if anything has been recorded.

If you have a boat parked within the compound I advise that you check its security.  Please will you inform me of any thefts from or interference with your boat so that we know the extent of the problem.

 Regards

 Kelvin Harper

(Boat Parking Secretary)
